If your ambitions are sky-high, then there are worse places to talk about them than at London’s highest public garden (Alex Ralph writes). Thus, yesterday, among the foliage on top of the City’s Walkie Talkie tower, Vodafone launched its fifth generation mobile network in the UK.

Nick Jeffery, chief executive, switched on its 5G service in seven British cities, taking the total to twenty-seven in Europe. It is all part of Vodafone’s aim to become Europe’s largest 5G network, reaching more than 50 cities by the end of 2020 and at least eight million people by 2021.

Against the backdrop of the Sky Garden and a “Reinvent” advertising campaign, Vodafone said that it hoped 5G would prove an opportunity to sow the seeds of regrowth.
